At MANAMU, we have always believed that our woven pieces are more than objects of light or adornment. They are bridges. They are vessels of over a 1000-year-old “Hand-Wisdom” that connects the modern collector to the ancestral soul of Sumba Island.
But to truly understand the “Woven Engineering” of our LULU AMAHU installations, one must travel beyond the gallery. You must step out of “Clock Time” and into the rhythmic pulse of the highlands.
I am officially inviting you to join us for the 2026 MANAMU Cultural Adventures.
Sumba: Timeless. Untamed. Unforgettable.
Sumba is an island where the megalithic past lives in the present. Here, the landscape is defined by soaring Uma Mbatangu (traditional peaked houses) and the thundering hooves of the sandalwood ponies. Our Cultural Adventure is a curated, high-profile immersion designed for those who seek to witness the “Future of Heritage” firsthand.
The Ritual of Welcome: Luluk Panggara Taungu & Pahappa
Your journey begins with a heartbeat. In the village of Praiyawang and beyond, we are met with the Luluk Panggara Taungu—a collective call of joy. You will hear the Kakalak (the men’s spirited shout) and the Kayaka (the women’s celebratory trill) echoing across the valley. It is the “breath” of Sumbanese hospitality.
Before we discuss the art of the weave, we share in the Pahappa (Sirih Pinang). When the host offers you the Kalumbut (small lontar leaves woven basket) containing betel nut, it is a gesture of ancient democracy. In this moment, whether you are a CEO, a nobleman, or an artisan, we all sit as equals. It is the “First Gesture of the Heart,” signaling that you are no longer a stranger, but a member of the fold.
The Architecture of the Thread
The centerpiece of our expedition is the “Story of the Weave.” We take you behind the scenes to meet our collective of master artisans.
• Lulu Amahu: Witness the technical mastery of metal weaving. This near-lost art requires an “Ancestral Instinct” to maintain the perfect tension of stainless steel and copper.
• Ikat & Pahikung (Pahudu): Beyond the famous Ikat, we dive into the sculptural world of Pahikung textiles. Using supplementary warp threads and 100% botanical dyes (like Indigo and Morinda), our traditional textiles partners create 3D reliefs that mirror the structural integrity of our metalwork.
Witness the Ritual: The Pasola
For those joining our March expedition, the highlight is the Pasola. A ritual war game of extraordinary equestrian skill, the Pasola is a dialogue with the ancestors. Watching master horsemen charge at full gallop across the ritual plains is a humbling reminder that in Sumba, beauty and bravery are inextricably linked. It is the raw energy that inspires the resilience of every MANAMU design.
Regenerative Hospitality: Your Impact
By joining us, you aren’t just a traveller; you are a stakeholder. A portion of every expedition fee directly funds our Master-Apprentice Program, providing the economic oxygen required for this megalithic culture to breathe in a modern world. We are proving that luxury can be a vehicle for cultural sovereignty.
2026 Expedition Dates
We keep our groups intentionally small to ensure private access and intimate connections. We are now accepting registrations for the following 2026 windows:
• July 20th – 25th, 2026
• September 21st – 26th, 2026
The highlands are calling. The weave is waiting. Will you answer the call?
