On our recent MANAMU Cultural Adventure, we didn’t just see Sumba; we heard it.
Before the first thread is woven or the first bronze gong is struck, there is a sound that defines the very soul of East Sumba. It is a sound that vibrates in the chest of every guest who joins us. It is the Luluk Panggara Taungu.
What is Luluk Panggara Taungu?
To understand the culture of Sumba is to understand its language—not just the spoken words, but the ritualized sounds that bridge the human and the divine. Literally translated:
• Luluk: Refers to ritual speech, songs of praise, or rhythmic chants.
• Panggara: To call, invite, or awaken a spirit of enthusiasm.
• Taungu: Relates to time, the season, or the communal “people.”
Combined, Luluk Panggara Taungu is a “Collective Call of Joy.” It is the traditional way our artisan communities tell the world—and the ancestors—that something significant is happening. It marks the passing of a season, the celebration of a harvest, or, most importantly for our guests, the arrival of new friends into the village fold.
The Vocal Weave: Kakalak & Kayaka
In Sumba, joy is not a silent emotion. The Luluk manifests in two powerful, gendered expressions that act as the “spice” of any welcoming ceremony:
1. The Kakalak: The men’s high-pitched, spirited shout. It is sharp, energetic, and serves to awaken the spirits of the warriors.
2. The Kayaka: The women’s corresponding trill or shout, full of celebration and communal grace.
Without these voices, traditional dances like the Ninghugarama or Kabokang would be “sunyi”—empty. The Luluk provides the energy that feeds the dancers. We watched as the heavy stomp of the dancers’ feet was perfectly synchronized with these ritual shouts, creating an atmosphere that felt both magisterial and deeply festive.
The Significance to MANAMU
Why is this so important to our mission? Because at MANAMU, we believe that Hand-Wisdom is inseparable from Voice-Wisdom.
Just as we weave metal threads into our Lulu Amahu installations, the community weaves these ritual sounds to create a protective, welcoming space. The Luluk is the “breath” of the celebration. It reminds us that our products are not just inanimate objects; they are born from a culture that knows how to shout its happiness to the heavens.
In our Regenerative Hospitality model, we don’t just want you to buy a lampshade. We want you to stand on the porch of a peaked house, hear the Kakalak ring out across the valley, and realize that you are part of a living, breathing social fabric.
The Sound of Happiness
As we return to our studio & storytelling center in Bali, the echoes of the Luluk stay with us. It is a reminder that in Sumba, there is no such thing as a “stranger”—only a guest who hasn’t yet heard the call of welcome.
If you are looking to find your own rhythm, to step out of “Clock Time” and into the magical energy of the highlands, our 2026 Cultural Adventures are waiting for you:
• June 8th – 13th, 2026
• July 20th – 25th, 2026
• September 21st – 26th, 2026
We will be there, and the Luluk will be there to call you home.
With warmth and light,
Melania Karolina Preserving Sumba Artisan Heritage
